DNA Galleries Is the Plaza District Stop I Keep Saving for Later

A look inside DNA Galleries in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District, an artist-made retail shop and contemporary gallery featuring Oklahoma artists, prints, pottery, jewelry, magnets, gifts, and rotating exhibitions.

I walked into DNA Galleries with a gift card and walked out still holding it, which sounds like a failure until you know the place.

DNA Galleries in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District is the kind of shop where I can browse for 20 minutes, find three things I like, then decide I’d rather come back when the next batch of work rotates in. That is not indecision. That is strategy, or at least that is what I’m calling it.

The gallery sits on NW 16th Street in the Plaza District, the stretch between Classen and Penn where OKC’s arts district still feels like it has a pulse of its own. Restaurants, murals, small shops, theater traffic, people wandering in and out of storefronts. DNA fits that rhythm well because it is part retail shop, part contemporary gallery, and part Oklahoma art field guide.

Inside, the mix is the point. Original artwork, prints, handmade gifts, jewelry, pottery, cards, stickers, apparel, housewares, and other pieces from local and regional artists all share the space. It does not feel like a souvenir shop trying to sell you Oklahoma in block letters. It feels more like Oklahoma filtered through people who actually live here and notice the odd little details.

One section I always end up spending time in is the Oklahoma photography and magnets. There are local landmarks, roadside images, Route 66 references, and pieces that lean into the strange, specific places that make this state fun to wander. Those are the ones that get me. I like when art remembers the little roadside things we drive past, laugh at, photograph, and then somehow miss later.

That is also why DNA Galleries works as a gift stop. You can find something that feels tied to Oklahoma without grabbing the same mass-produced item you’ve seen at five other places. A print for someone’s wall. A sticker for a water bottle. A magnet from a place that made you pull over once. A small handmade piece that says more than a generic “Oklahoma” sign ever could.

Why I Keep Coming Back

DNA Galleries opened in 2008 and focuses on Oklahoma artists and makers, with monthly exhibitions that keep the space from feeling frozen. That matters. Some shops are basically the same visit every time. Here, the walls and shelves shift enough that it rewards repeat stops.

That is why I did not feel bad saving the gift card. I know I’ll use it. I just also know there will be a different version of the shop waiting next time.

The Plaza District itself makes the stop better for me, too. I got engaged just across the street from DNA Galleries, at the same spot where I first laid eyes on my wife years earlier. So every time I’m in this part of OKC, I’m already carrying a little extra memory with me. Walking into DNA after that feels less like checking off a store and more like revisiting a corner of the city that has kept adding layers.

If you go during Live on the Plaza, the district’s second-Friday art walk, DNA Galleries makes even more sense. The whole street leans into art openings, music, shopping, and people-watching. But honestly, it is also a good stop on a regular afternoon when you just want to browse without making a whole production out of it.

What to Look For

The rotating exhibitions are worth checking first, especially if you follow Oklahoma artists or like seeing who is showing in the Plaza District. DNA regularly features new work from rising and established local artists, so the gallery side can change the whole feel of the visit.

For smaller finds, look through the prints, cards, stickers, Oklahoma-themed pieces, and giftable handmade items. That is where the shop becomes dangerous in a very reasonable way. You may go in thinking you are just looking around, then suddenly you are justifying a magnet, a print, and a card for someone you have not technically bought a gift for yet.

That is Plaza District math. I don’t make the rules.

DNA Galleries is a good stop if you like local art, need an Oklahoma-made gift, want something better than big-box decor, or just enjoy seeing how artists interpret the state around them. It is not precious about it. It is approachable, easy to browse, and specific to OKC in a way that makes the visit feel grounded.

I still have that gift card. I also already know I’ll have no trouble spending it.
