JR’s Pub & Grill Is Where South OKC Gets Burgers, Karaoke and Night Golf

JR’s Pub & Grill in south Oklahoma City pairs burgers, pool, karaoke and TVs with a lighted nine-hole par-3 golf course, driving range and mini golf.

There are plenty of neighborhood bars around Oklahoma City. There are not many where you can eat a grilled onion cheeseburger, play pool, sing karaoke and then walk outside to play nine holes of golf under the lights.

That is the whole oddball charm of JR’s Pub & Grill at 4041 SW 149th Street on the far south side of Oklahoma City. It is part pub, part grill, part driving range, part putt-putt stop and part short-course golf outing. Somehow, that combination has been working since 1986.

JR’s sits in that south OKC stretch where the city starts feeling a little less city and a little more county-road practical. It is easy to miss if you are not already headed that direction, but once you know what is out there, it makes a strange kind of sense.

A Pub With a Golf Course Attached

JR’s is built around a simple idea that feels more Oklahoma than it probably should: what if the neighborhood bar also had a golf course?

The golf side includes a nine-hole par-3 course, a driving range and miniature golf. The par-3 setup keeps it approachable. You do not need to block off half a day, dress like you are joining a country club or pretend your short game is better than it is. You can hit a bucket, play a quick round, or bring someone who just wants to mess around on mini golf.

The big hook is the lighting. JR’s offers night golf, which changes the whole feel of the place. A short par-3 course is already casual, but under the lights it turns into something closer to a backyard challenge with better infrastructure and fewer arguments about who lost the ball.

The official golf page notes that night golf and lighting can depend on timing and group size, so this is one of those places where calling ahead is smart if you are specifically going for after-dark golf.

The Burger Still Matters

Even with all the golf, JR’s is still a pub and grill first.

The menu leans into the stuff that makes sense after swinging clubs or sitting around with friends: burgers, fries, hotlinks, wings, chicken strips, sandwiches, fried pickles and mozzarella sticks. The item JR’s puts front and center is its Famous 1/3 lb Grilled Onion Cheeseburger, which is exactly the kind of thing you want a south OKC pub to be proud of.

I like that the place does not seem overly interested in becoming slick. The appeal is not that JR’s is trying to be the newest entertainment complex in town. It is that the same property can handle a burger, a beer, karaoke, pool tables, TVs, putt-putt and a quick nine holes without acting like any of that is unusual.

That is rare now. A lot of places pick one lane and brand it to death. JR’s feels more like somebody kept adding the things people actually wanted to do.

Nearly 40 Years on the South Side

The JR’s story traces back to Joseph Rischard, an Oklahoma City businessman connected to JR’s Bar and Grill and JR’s Nite-Lite Golf Course. His background included work with Western Electric and Lucent Technologies, along with several business ventures around the metro, including Joe’s Sod Farm.

That tracks with the feel of the place. JR’s does not come across like a concept built in a meeting. It feels like a practical south-side institution that grew into itself over time.

And nearly 40 years later, the mix still works.

You can go there for the food and never touch a club. You can go for the driving range and skip the bar. You can bring friends for mini golf, stay for karaoke, or decide at 9 p.m. that another nine holes is a perfectly reasonable idea.

Most pubs cannot offer that last part.
