This has to be one of the most unique, bizarre and perfect businesses in Oklahoma City.
I discovered Shaq’s Vegan Dogs while attending the Summer Solstice Festival at the Oklahoma City Farmers Public Market on Father’s Day weekend. I had never noticed it before, but the moment I saw a vegan hot dog restaurant operating out of what appeared to be a garage, I was immediately intrigued.
Honestly, I almost skipped it. It was hot, I was exhausted from the day, and I was ready to head home. Something told me I needed to go check it out first, and I am so glad that I did.
In fact, I’m just going to say it: this is my favorite restaurant that I’ve discovered in the last year.
The restaurant is located in the building next to the Farmers Market, sharing a parking lot with Piñata’s Store, a local business that sells fruits, vegetables, plants, and other produce. The entire setup is unlike anything else I’ve seen in the city. The fact that it’s operating out of a garage is almost bewildering, but in the best possible way.
There are around a dozen different vegan dogs on the menu along with several sides. We ordered the Korean Dog and the Elote Dog, and both were completely different from each other. They were so good that I immediately found myself wanting to come back and try the rest of the menu.
The waffle fries deserve their own mention. They were easily some of the best fries I’ve had at any restaurant.
The food was fantastic, but what really made this place stand out was everything surrounding it.
The owner, Shaq, was an incredibly cool guy. You could tell right away that this wasn’t just another business. This was something he had poured his heart and soul into.
One of my favorite parts was that his son had a booth set up outside selling Pokémon cards. How much cooler can you get?
Inside, there was a Nintendo GameCube set up for kids to play. Shaq was also selling artwork created by his sister-in-law. Everywhere you looked there was another small detail that made the place feel personal.
I spend a lot of time exploring Oklahoma and visiting local businesses, and sometimes you come across a place that reminds you why independent businesses matter. Not because they’re trying to be the biggest thing around, but because they’re built with passion, creativity, and a willingness to do something different.
This place had all of that.
What impressed me most was that it wasn’t just unique. The food actually lived up to everything else. A lot of places have a great concept but mediocre food. Shaq’s Vegan Dogs managed to have both.
I left feeling proud that a place like this exists in Oklahoma City. It’s the kind of business that makes a city more interesting. The kind of place you tell your friends about afterward.
They’re only open for a few hours on certain days, so be sure to check their schedule before heading over.
And when you do, make sure you support them. These are exactly the kinds of local businesses that deserve to succeed.
I know I’ll be back.
