The chocolate turtles were the thing that slowed me down.
La Baguette on North May Avenue has plenty of distractions, fresh bread, pastry cases, decorated cakes, deli shelves, the whole French bistro setup, but I kept coming back to that little cluster of chocolate turtles in the case. I’ve always had a soft spot for them. Pecans, caramel, chocolate, no need to overcomplicate it. These looked rich and polished without losing that simple candy-shop appeal.
That’s the thing about the bakery and deli side of La Baguette Bistro in Oklahoma City. You can go in for a meal and accidentally turn it into a small outing.
La Baguette has been part of the Northwest OKC dining map for a long time, sitting at 7408 North May Avenue near Warwick Drive, just south of the Nichols Hills edge of town. The bistro gets plenty of attention for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and French-leaning comfort food, but the surrounding bakery, deli, market, and wine shop pieces are worth slowing down for on their own.
Walking through the bakery and deli feels about as close as you’re going to get to a European pastry shop without leaving Oklahoma City. That is not me saying OKC suddenly turned into Paris. It is still North May. But the cases are doing the work.
There are fresh breads, pastries, desserts, cake slices, whole cakes, individual chocolates, and those glass-case treats that make you start negotiating with yourself. One for now. A few for later. Maybe something “for the house,” which is Oklahoma code for “I will eat this in the car if traffic is bad.”
More Than the Bistro
What stood out to me was how much is packed into the La Baguette family of spaces. It does not feel like you are just walking past a dessert counter on the way out. The bakery and deli have their own pull.
The cake display alone is enough to stop you. The decorated cakes are clean, pretty, and clearly made to be shown off before anyone cuts into them. Nearby, the chocolate case has that same effect on a smaller scale. Individual pieces lined up in rows. Turtles. Truffles. Little desserts that make it easy to build your own box instead of committing to one big thing.
I liked that it was easy to browse without feeling rushed. The staff was friendly, but not hovering. That matters in a place like this, because half the fun is staring at everything and changing your mind three times.
The smell helps too. Bread and pastry have a way of making a place feel generous before you even buy anything. Add chocolate to that, and it becomes harder to leave empty-handed.
What I’d Do Next Time
If you’re already going to La Baguette Bistro for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, I’d build in extra time afterward. Not a lot. Just enough to walk through the bakery and deli, look at the cakes, check the chocolate case, and see what looks good that day.
The chocolate turtles were my pick on this visit. They were rich, fresh, and exactly the kind of simple treat I was hoping they’d be. Since bakery cases can change, I wouldn’t assume the exact same chocolates are always sitting there, but that is part of the fun of stopping in.
This is a good place for someone who likes browsing after a meal, picking up dessert for home, grabbing a loaf of bread, or turning a regular dinner into something with a little extra wandering attached. It is not trying to be a trendy bakery with neon signs and a one-item gimmick. It feels more established than that, like a place that has figured out how to be a bistro, bakery, deli, and market without making the customer work too hard to enjoy it.
La Baguette is one of those OKC stops where the meal is only part of the visit. I went in thinking about the bistro and left thinking about chocolate turtles. That feels about right.
