Upper Crust Wood Fired Pizza Is Still One of Our Easy OKC Pizza Picks

Upper Crust Wood Fired Pizza in Oklahoma City’s Classen Curve area serves wood-fired thin-crust pies, cocktails, wine, salads, pasta, and more. Here’s what stood out from our visit.

Upper Crust Wood Fired Pizza is one of those Oklahoma City restaurants we keep circling back to when the pizza craving hits, especially around the Nichols Hills and Classen Curve area. It is not a tiny slice counter. It is more of an uptown pizza-and-wine-bar setup, with a dining room that feels a little nicer than the average pizza place without getting stiff about it.

On this visit, we came hungry and made the table do some work.

The best bite was the featured Upper Amore pizza. That one came topped with prosciutto, fig, creamy goat cheese, fresh arugula, and a balsamic glaze swirl. It had the sweet-salty thing working, but not in a way that felt like somebody was trying too hard. The fig and balsamic brought the sweetness, the prosciutto handled the salt, and the goat cheese gave it some richness. Then the arugula came in at the end and made the whole thing feel a little less heavy.

Inside Upper Crust, the dining room blends a lively bar feel with plenty of booth and table seating.

The wood-fired crust helped, too. Thin, a little smoky, with enough chew to hold up under all that going on.

What We Ordered

We also got the Psycho Shroom, which is one of Upper Crust’s signature pizzas. It is built for mushroom people, with roasted mushrooms, fontina, truffle oil, chives, and Grana Padano. Truffle oil can get bossy fast, but here it stayed in its lane. The pizza tasted rich and earthy without turning into perfume, which is about the highest compliment I can give a truffle pizza.

Fresh arugula and a dark drizzle give this pie a lighter, sharper finish.

To balance out the more dressed-up pies, we ordered a smaller custom pizza with pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, and onions. There is a reason that combination has survived every pizza menu in America. It works. The sausage and peppers especially made sense with the char from the oven.

The menu includes simple pasta plates like spaghetti with a meatball and cheesy bread.

Upper Crust also has a bigger menu than the name suggests. We tried the Pan-Crisped Fish, which came with a walnut and pistachio crust, tomato salsa, orange vinaigrette, and a side salad. That plate was a nice break from all the cheese and crust on the table. Still flavorful, just lighter.

The kids’ spaghetti and meatballs came with garlic bread and did exactly what it needed to do. No drama. Red sauce, meatballs, noodles, bread. Sometimes the kid at the table is the most honest restaurant critic, and this one passed.

Caesar salad with romaine, croutons, creamy dressing, black pepper, and shaved cheese at Upper Crust.
A Caesar salad is a classic starter before the pizza arrives.

We also had a couple of cocktails while the pizzas came out of the oven. Upper Crust leans into the bar side of things with wine, cocktails, beer, and zero-proof options, so it works just as well for a slower dinner as it does for a quick pizza night.

Why It Works

The thing I like about Upper Crust is that it can handle a mixed table. If half the group wants specialty pizza and somebody else wants fish, pasta, salad, or a drink and an appetizer, nobody has to negotiate too hard.

The bar menu adds cocktails to the pizza-night experience.

It also fits a couple of different moods. You could bring the family here and not feel out of place. You could also sit down for a date night and split a bottle of wine and a couple of pies without feeling like you accidentally picked the kids’ soccer party restaurant.

The open kitchen and wood-fired ovens help the room, too. There is just enough movement and heat coming from that side of the restaurant to make dinner feel alive. You can tell the pizzas are not being treated like an afterthought.

Upper Crust rotates featured pizzas, so the Upper Amore may not always be there. If it is, I’d put it near the top of the order. If not, the Psycho Shroom is a strong place to start, especially if you like mushrooms and a richer white-style pizza.

There are plenty of pizza places in Oklahoma City, and I am not here to pretend every pie has to be a spiritual event. But Upper Crust has stayed in our rotation because the crust is good, the toppings are thoughtful, and the menu gives you room to bring people who are not all ordering the same thing.

For me, that is the sweet spot. Good pizza, a comfortable room, enough options, and no need to overthink dinner.
