Windsor Donuts Was a Good Late Stop on My OKC Donut Tour

At this point in my Oklahoma City donut run, the map is starting to look pretty filled in. I’ve filmed at what feels like nearly every donut shop in the city, which means the places left on the list are getting fewer and farther between.

One of those final stops was Windsor Donuts, just north of NW 23rd on Meridian Avenue. After finally getting in there, I’m glad I didn’t leave it off.

Windsor Donuts is a small neighborhood donut shop at 2536 N. Meridian Ave., right in the Windsor District. It is not trying to reinvent the donut case. No cereal mountain. No candy bar architecture. No frosting situation that needs a structural engineer.

Just a full case of familiar favorites, breakfast sandwiches, and the kind of prices that still make it possible to buy a little box without feeling like you just financed brunch.

That is usually the kind of donut shop I end up liking.

Donut holes, a chocolate twist, and an apple fritter

We kept the order traditional: a bunch of donut holes, a chocolate twist, and an apple fritter.

The donut holes were the easiest thing to keep eating, which is both their job and their danger. Grabbing “one more” never feels like ordering another whole donut, even though we all know how that math usually works out.

The chocolate twist was solid, soft and sweet without trying to be too much. Sometimes that is exactly what I want from a donut shop. Not every breakfast needs a thesis statement.

The apple fritter was the one I paid the most attention to. A good apple fritter needs those fried edges, little pockets of apple, and enough glaze to make it feel like dessert without turning the whole thing into sugar armor. This one hit that lane. It had the craggy edges I’m looking for, apple throughout, and enough glaze to do the job.

That is the kind of simple donut shop win that does not need a lot of dressing up.

I need to go back for breakfast

The thing I did not really plan for was the breakfast sandwich side of the case.

Windsor Donuts serves the sort of early-morning breakfast lineup you see at a lot of neighborhood donut shops: sausage rolls, croissants, breakfast sandwiches, and burrito-style options. I noticed ham, egg and cheese croissants and sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches, and they looked better than I expected.

I did not order one this time because I was there to cross another donut shop off the OKC list. But I left knowing I need to go back for breakfast.

There is something about a breakfast sandwich from a small donut counter that usually beats the chain version. Maybe it is the croissant. Maybe it is the fact that you can also walk out with a sack of donut holes. Either way, I’m not done with this place yet.

A Windsor District morning stop

The stretch around NW 23rd and Meridian has more history than it gets credit for. The Windsor area has long been tied to neighborhood shopping and small businesses, with the Windsor Hills Shopping Center dating back to the late 1950s. The corridor has changed plenty over the years, but it still has that mix of older retail strips, practical errands, and local places tucked between bigger-name businesses.

Windsor Donuts fits that setting well. It feels like a morning stop for people who already know what they want: a dozen glazed, a fritter, a bag of donut holes, maybe a breakfast sandwich on the way to work.

Nothing about it felt overbuilt. That was the charm.

My Oklahoma City donut tour is getting close to running out of stops, but Windsor Donuts was a good one to save for late in the game. The donut holes were easy to like, the chocolate twist did what it needed to do, and the apple fritter had the fried edges I’m always hoping for.

If you are around NW 23rd and Meridian in the morning, Windsor Donuts is an easy stop to make. And if you get one of those breakfast sandwiches before I make it back, I’d like a report.
