Formosa After Dark: A Birthday Night on Uptown 23rd
A birthday night at Formosa Street Food & Bar in Oklahoma City, with neon-lit Uptown 23rd, Taiwanese street food, and the Tower Theatre around the corner.
We had a birthday to celebrate, and Formosa made a good place to let the evening unfold. My wife's brother Daniel was visiting from Philadelphia, so we met up on NW 23rd, just steps from the Tower Theatre. The neon sign, the music inside, the clatter of plates and the steady stream of people coming and going made it feel like we had dropped into the middle of the neighborhood instead of just sitting down for dinner.
I wrote before about Formosa as a place built around ordering for the table. This visit felt different: less a dish-by-dish review and more a birthday-night snapshot of a restaurant that belongs to one of Oklahoma City's liveliest stretches. Here's what made this stop memorable—and why the block itself is part of the outing.

A birthday stop on a busy stretch of 23rd
Formosa Street Food & Bar sits at 427 NW 23rd Street, in Uptown 23rd and beside the Tower Theatre. The restaurant opened in 2022 in the former Unwind Cafe space, bringing a Taiwanese and Asian street-food concept to a corridor already known for music venues, neighborhood bars and late-night stops. Edible OKC's profile describes owner Ivan Wong's connection to Taiwan and the name Formosa, a historic name for the island.
That setting changes how a meal here feels. Before the first plate arrives, there's the sign outside, the theatre marquee nearby and a neighborhood that keeps moving after dinner. Our photos start outside and carry that street energy indoors.

The room has its own late-night rhythm
Inside, the lighting is low and colorful, with a long bar, close-set tables and a view into the open room. It's lively without feeling like a formal occasion. That was right for a birthday dinner: we could catch up, look over the menu and let the table fill in as the evening went on.
The restaurant describes itself as Taiwanese and Asian street food and a bar. The official site lists its current hours as 4 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 4 to 9:45 p.m. Sunday. Check the official hours and location page before heading out, since hours can change.

The point was the night, not a greatest-hits list
My earlier Formosa story already covers the pleasure of ordering several plates for the table and calls out dishes from that visit. I don't want to just rerun that menu tour. This time, the photos are the record: drinks on the table, food arriving in waves, people leaning in, and a birthday giving everyone a reason to stay awhile.
Formosa is particularly easy to pair with whatever else you have planned on 23rd. You can meet here before a show at Tower Theatre, stop in afterward, or make dinner the whole plan. The restaurant's official menu covers current food and drink offerings; the menu can change, so use that page for today's lineup.

Formosa's place in the Uptown story
Formosa is a young restaurant on a much older Oklahoma City corridor. Uptown 23rd grew along Route 66, and the Tower Theatre has anchored the neighborhood's entertainment identity since it opened in 1937. Today, that historic theatre, independent restaurants and bars give the district a walkable night-out feel. Formosa's 2022 arrival added another reason to make the block a destination, not just a drive-through.

The name looks back even farther. As Edible OKC explains, “Formosa” is a Portuguese name historically used for Taiwan, and Wong chose it as a nod to his home. That small piece of context gives the neon sign outside a story beyond its bright colors.

This visit wasn't about trying to name one winner from the menu. It was about getting together, raising a glass for Daniel and letting Uptown 23rd supply the atmosphere. Sometimes that's the best kind of restaurant recommendation.
