Bistro 38 Is the NW 36th Thai Spot That Got Me Off TikTok and Into the Dining Room

Bistro 38 Thai Green Cuisine is a family-owned Thai restaurant near NW 36th and May in Oklahoma City, serving Pad Thai, Khao Soi, curry puffs, lunch specials, and a large vegan Thai menu.

Bistro 38 sits in the kind of NW 36th Street shopping center you can pass a dozen times without making a mental note of it. That’s part of the trick.

I had the opposite problem. This family-owned Thai restaurant near NW 36th and May had been on my radar because I kept seeing their TikToks. The woman in the videos has a way of showing the food, the family personality, and the little restaurant rhythms without making the whole thing feel like a sales pitch. Eventually, watching Thai food on your phone starts to feel a little ridiculous. You have to go eat.

Bistro 38 Thai Green Cuisine has been serving Oklahoma City since 2013, but its story starts a little earlier than that. Owner Tom Pakin previously operated a Bistro 38 in Edmond before selling that restaurant and opening the current OKC location. The Oklahoma Gazette wrote about the restaurant in 2017 and explained the “Thai Green Cuisine” idea as a way of bringing more vegetables and nutritional variety into familiar Thai dishes.

That still feels like the point of the place. Bistro 38 is not trying to look like the biggest Thai restaurant in Oklahoma City. It feels more like a family restaurant that knows exactly what lane it’s in.

The “green” part is not just a name

Bistro 38 describes itself as a family restaurant run by Yimmie and Tom, built around recipes, ingredients, and flavors they grew up with in Thailand. The restaurant’s own story talks about Thai hospitality as much as Thai food, which sounds like a small distinction until you think about how many strip-center restaurants live or die by whether people feel cared for when they sit down.

The “green” idea shows up in the menu. Bistro 38 still serves the standards people expect from a Thai restaurant in OKC, including Pad Thai, Tom Yum, curries, fried rice, and Khao Soi. But there’s also a vegetable-forward streak running through the place, with dishes like green fried rice and jungle curry getting called out in the restaurant’s earlier press for packing in more vegetables like bell peppers, green beans, snow peas, broccoli, mushrooms, and peppers.

That is a very Oklahoma City restaurant move in the best way: take a familiar category, listen to the people coming through the door, and slowly make it your own.

The vegan menu came from paying attention

The part of Bistro 38’s story that stuck with me most was how the vegan menu grew.

According to the restaurant, around 2022 a family came in with a young girl who wanted vegan Pad Thai. She had something to eat, but her father had so few options that he ended up ordering steamed rice. Yimmie and Tom said that bothered them enough that they started working on more plant-based versions of Thai dishes.

That is how a handful of vegan options turned into one of the more serious vegan Thai menus in Oklahoma City.

It’s a small detail, but it says a lot. A bigger restaurant group might have turned that into a quarterly menu discussion. A family restaurant can notice it at the table and change course. Now Bistro 38 serves vegan-friendly Thai dishes alongside vegetarian and gluten-free options, which makes it a useful stop when one group has several different food needs.

The menu includes things like Vegan Pad Thai, Vegan Khao Soi, curries, curry noodles, Tom Kha, appetizers, and curry puffs. The curry puff section alone has more personality than some full menus, with versions including chicken, vegan, BBQ pork, Panang, and ube-young coconut.

A small OKC Thai restaurant that has lasted

Oklahoma City has a stronger Thai food scene than people outside the metro probably realize, so lasting more than a decade matters. Bistro 38 opened its current OKC location in 2013 and has kept evolving without losing the family-run center of the restaurant.

The weekday lunch specials are also worth knowing about. Bistro 38 lists lunch specials and lunch combos Tuesday through Friday, with dishes like Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, Pad See Ew, fried rice, curry combinations with jasmine rice, and vegan Pad Thai. There’s also a “Crazy Hot” spice level, which feels like a dare more than a menu option. Some people need to learn by touching the stove.

What I like about Bistro 38 is that the storefront undersells the story. From the road, it is a modest Thai restaurant in a small shopping center. Once you know the background, the place reads differently: Edmond roots, an OKC home since 2013, a family menu, a vegetable-forward point of view, and a vegan expansion that came from seeing someone left out at the table.

That is the kind of restaurant social media is actually good at revealing. The videos got my attention, but the reason Bistro 38 matters is older and simpler than TikTok. It’s a family sharing food they care about, in a part of Oklahoma City where people have been walking in hungry for more than ten years.
