BIG Brewing Company (Beer is Good)

Earlier in the day I had been separating a mountain of Tabasco pepper seeds and grabbing dinner at Thai Delight in Norman, so by the time we made it to BIG Brewing Company that night, it already felt like a full day. But the real reason we were there wasn’t beer — it was a surprise.

A family friend was turning 70, and her crew did it right.

She walked through the door thinking it was just another Friday, and the entire bar exploded with “SURPRISE!” Not just her friends. Not just family. Everyone. Every table. Every stool. Total strangers were suddenly part of the celebration. That kind of thing only works if the place has the right energy, and BIG Brewing Company had it.

There’s something deeply encouraging about watching someone hit 70 and still have a room full of people show up for them. Not just show up — show up loud. It makes you think about what kind of life builds that kind of crowd.

The taproom itself is open and easygoing. Plenty of room for groups, but it still feels connected. You’re not tucked away in some private corner — you’re part of the room. That’s probably why the whole bar jumped in on the surprise. It feels communal in a good way, not a forced way.

The beer lineup is solid. Since I was driving, I stuck with Athletic non-alcoholic beer and kept it responsible. Everyone else at the table sampled more broadly and had zero complaints. The vibe was relaxed, friendly, and just the right amount of noisy.

What stood out most wasn’t even the beer, though. It was watching someone be genuinely shocked — hands over her face, laughing, hugging everyone in sight. Seventy years in, and still surprised in the best possible way.

BIG Brewing Company sits right in the heart of downtown Norman, which makes it an easy anchor for a night out. You park once and you’re set. We didn’t wander much that night because the party took over, but it’s worth noting that just across the street is Apple Tree Chocolate, and a little further down is Speeding Bullet Comics — both solid stops if you’re making an evening of it.

But this night belonged to one thing: a packed taproom, a loud surprise, and proof that a well-lived life draws a crowd.
