Friendly Thrift Store in Oklahoma City Feels Like a Family-Run OKC Thrift Stop

A look inside Friendly Thrift Store in Oklahoma City, a family-run thrift shop near NW 50th and Meridian with clothes, shoes, housewares, records, toys, furniture, and oddball secondhand finds.

Construction on Northwest 50th Street is not usually how I plan a thrift stop, but that is what got me back into Friendly Thrift Store.

The painted front window gives the shop a cheerful, local feel.

I was cutting through the parking lot in that NW 50th and Meridian area of Oklahoma City when I noticed the sign. I had been in years ago, then somehow forgot about it, which is easy to do with small shopping center stores. They sit there doing their thing while the rest of us drive past on autopilot.

I had a few minutes, so I stopped in. I’m glad I did.

Friendly Thrift Store is a small mall thrift shop at 4487 NW 50th St. in Oklahoma City, and it has the feel of a long-running local place rather than a chain thrift store with the same layout in every zip code. The couple running it told me they recently took over after it had been handed down from the wife’s parents. That lines up with how the store feels: not new, not slick, but cared for.

They were genuinely nice, too. The husband is from the Los Angeles area and moved to Oklahoma a couple years ago, so we ended up talking a little about that since I lived in the same area for years. They seemed excited about the business, and more than that, proud of it. That matters in a thrift store. You can tell when people are just keeping the lights on, and you can tell when they’re trying to make the place work.

Friendly Thrift has a lot packed into its space, but it is not a disaster maze. That was the first thing I noticed. There is merchandise everywhere, but I could still walk through it without doing the sideways thrift-store shuffle.

The main mix is what you’d hope for in an old-school OKC thrift stop: clothes, shoes, purses, housewares, artwork, electronics, toys, board games, and records. A lot of records, actually. Enough that if you still like flipping through sleeves and judging past households by their music choices, you’ll have a few minutes of work to do.

The housewares section had the usual thrift-store spread, the kind of shelves where you might find a practical kitchen piece, a strange decorative object, or something your grandma definitely owned in 1986. There were also toys and games, plus some bigger items that made the store feel less predictable.

A few things stuck out. They had automotive rims, which younger me would have been way too interested in. There was an air hockey table at a price that made me pause. And there was a gigantic rideable dog toy for toddlers, the kind of thing that looks ridiculous until you imagine a small kid absolutely losing their mind over it.

The store also stocks practical household items and small kitchen appliances.

I almost wanted to hop on it myself, then remembered I am nearly 40 and still need my knees for basic errands.

The store was busy while I was there, with people actually shopping instead of just wandering. That is usually a good sign. Not because a crowd guarantees treasure, but because a thrift store with steady traffic tends to have some life to it. Things move. New stuff comes in. People are checking corners.

This is not a curated vintage boutique. It is also not one of those places where everything feels dumped in a room and wished good luck. Friendly Thrift sits in the better middle ground: full, varied, and still organized enough to shop without losing patience.

If I had more time, I would have stayed longer. That is probably the best test for a thrift store. I did not leave because I was done looking. I left because the day had other plans.

Friendly Thrift Store is a good stop if you like the hunt and you are already moving through northwest Oklahoma City, Warr Acres, or the NW 50th corridor. Go in loose. Look at the racks. Check the records. Don’t skip the bigger items. And if you see the giant rideable dog, please make the responsible adult choice.

Or at least check your knees first.
