Theme park food has trained me to expect two things: mediocre food and a bill that makes absolutely no sense.
So when we went downstairs for breakfast at Curiosity Café at Universal Kids Resort Hotel in Frisco, Texas, I wasn’t expecting much more than something quick before heading out for the day. We were staying at the hotel, and breakfast there was the easiest move before using early park access.
What surprised me was that the food was actually good.
Not “good for a theme park.” Just good.
Curiosity Café is the quick-service restaurant inside the Universal Kids Resort Hotel. It serves breakfast, then switches over to lunch and dinner later in the day. The whole setup is built for families who need to feed people quickly without leaving the resort, which is exactly where we were that morning.
There were five of us eating breakfast, and all four adults somehow landed on the same order without coordinating: the Curiosity Café Sandwich.
The sandwich everybody picked
For $9.99 on our visit, the Curiosity Café Sandwich came with egg, pepper jack cheese, bacon, crispy onions and arugula on an oat-topped wheat bun. It also came with a choice of seasoned potatoes or cheesy grits.
That is considerably more interesting than the basic egg-and-cheese situation I expected from a hotel theme park breakfast counter.
The pepper jack and crispy onions gave it actual flavor. The bacon was good. The arugula helped keep the whole thing from feeling too heavy first thing in the morning, which matters when your day is about to involve a theme park and at least one child operating on vacation energy.
I went into breakfast expecting something closer to carnival food and ended up with a sandwich I would happily order at a regular breakfast restaurant.
The kid went with the UKR Mini Waffles, which also made sense. For $5.99 on our visit, the plate came with crispy miniature waffles, syrup, berries and whipped cream.
That is exactly the sort of breakfast a kid is probably going to pick when given the option, but it did not look like a sad little kids meal tossed onto a tray because everybody is trapped on property. It looked good. It tasted good. And the price did not make me stare at the receipt like it had personally wronged me.
Theme park breakfast without the usual punishment
The price was honestly the part that surprised me most.
I expected to pay a premium simply because we were eating at a Universal property. Instead, the prices felt closer to a normal breakfast restaurant away from the resort.
The Curiosity Café Sandwich was $9.99. The mini waffles were $5.99. A Classic Breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast was listed at $10.99.
For a family eating breakfast inside a brand-new resort hotel, that is pretty reasonable. You could easily spend the same amount, or more, at plenty of breakfast places around Oklahoma City before you ever get near a theme park.
That matters when you are traveling with a group. Feeding five people inside a resort can get expensive fast, and there is a difference between paying for convenience and feeling like convenience is being used against you.
Curiosity Café landed on the better side of that line.
Coffee people are also covered. Curiosity Café serves Starbucks, so you can grab coffee while everybody orders breakfast instead of making a separate stop somewhere else. In the morning, that kind of efficiency counts. Breakfast, coffee, then out the door.
I do not need every meal on a trip to be some elaborate dining experience. Sometimes I just want food that is convenient, reasonably priced and actually tastes good.
Curiosity Café checked all three boxes.
We went in because it was downstairs from our hotel room and easy before starting the day. I expected overpriced theme park breakfast and ended up genuinely impressed with what we got: four Curiosity Café Sandwiches, an order of mini waffles, Starbucks available right there, and prices that were not much worse than eating somewhere outside the resort.
If you are having breakfast at Universal Kids Resort Hotel, Curiosity Café is the easy play.
And thankfully, you do not have to survive on funnel cakes until lunch.
