I went to BillyGoat Grub in Norman for the lobster roll, because when a place on Main Street is selling one in the middle of Oklahoma, I’m at least curious enough to pull the door open.

BillyGoat Grub is at 209 W Main St. in Downtown Norman, the kind of stretch where you can make a whole evening out of eating, walking, and pretending you didn’t already look up dessert before dinner. This place started as a food truck and grew into a brick-and-mortar restaurant, which explains a lot once you look at the menu. It has that food-truck confidence where lobster, gumbo, goat griot, mac and cheese, and a cheesesteak can all share space without anybody asking permission.

The lobster roll is the headline order. It is listed with cold-water lobster tossed in lemon aioli, romaine, and a split-top bun. That is a very specific kind of sandwich to find in Norman, and it is exactly the sort of thing that makes me want to see whether the kitchen is serious or just having fun with a menu.

At BillyGoat Grub, it feels more like both.

The lobster roll gives you a clean, coastal idea in a downtown Oklahoma setting, but the rest of the menu is where the place gets interesting. There’s a Norman Cheesesteak, chicken and sausage gumbo, goat griot with pikliz, jambalaya, ramen soup, vegetable curry, Philly cheesesteak eggrolls, and andouille pub queso. That is not a timid menu. It reads like somebody took a comfort-food road map, spilled it across a table, and decided the borders were optional.

That could go wrong fast. A menu that jumps around too much can feel like a dare instead of dinner. But BillyGoat Grub has the background to make the mix feel less random. OU Daily named it the 2025 Best of Norman winner in the Food Truck category, and the restaurant is described around town as globally inspired comfort food. That tracks with what’s on the board. It is still comfort food, just not trapped in one lane.

Downtown Norman helps the whole thing make sense. Main Street has enough restaurants and bar traffic that a place like this can be playful without feeling out of place. You can come in for a lobster roll, come back for gumbo, then get talked into mac and cheese with an add-on because Oklahoma has never been shy about turning a side dish into an assignment.

The thing I kept thinking about is that BillyGoat Grub does not feel like a seafood restaurant, and that is probably the point. The lobster roll is a strong hook, but it is not the whole identity. It is a restaurant and food truck concept that seems built around whatever kind of comfort food sounds good, whether that means lemon aioli on a split-top bun or goat griot with pikliz.

That makes it a good stop for people who get bored with safe menus. It is also a good Norman lunch or dinner idea if you are already downtown and want something more specific than the usual burger-or-taco debate. I would especially point people here if they like trying the dish that seems slightly out of place. Sometimes that is where a restaurant shows you what it is really about.

BillyGoat Grub is not trying to be a New England seafood shack. It is a Norman restaurant with a food truck soul, a global comfort-food menu, and a lobster roll sitting right there on Main Street like it knows exactly how odd and appealing that sounds.
