Plaza Walls Was the Right Place to Celebrate 10,000 Followers

A Fourth of July walk through Plaza Walls in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District, with rotating murals, NW 16th Street shops, and why this outdoor art stop keeps pulling me back.

Today started with a number on a screen.

After months of making Okie Almanac videos, I hit 10,000 followers on TikTok, which meant I could finally apply for the Creator Rewards Program. One of the first assignments was to make a video at one of TikTok’s suggested locations.

That could have felt like homework. Instead, it gave me an excuse to go somewhere I already like.

I headed to Plaza Walls in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District, tucked behind the businesses along NW 16th Street. If you’ve walked that stretch between Classen and Pennsylvania, you know the district has its own rhythm. Storefronts, restaurants, dessert stops, theater energy, people cutting through alleys with coffees in hand, and then suddenly, walls full of color.

Plaza Walls is an outdoor mural project, not a quiet gallery where you feel like you need to whisper. The walls sit outside, mostly around the alley spaces behind the Plaza District businesses, and the art changes over time. That rotating part is what makes it worth coming back to. You can visit once, take a few photos, come back months later, and feel like the place has rearranged itself while you were busy doing errands.

On the Fourth of July, it felt especially right. Oklahoma summer light is not subtle, and neither are these murals. Big colors, sharp lines, layered paint, faces, lettering, patterns, and the kind of wall textures that make phone cameras work harder than usual.

Plaza Walls started in 2015 and grew into one of the easiest public art stops in OKC to recommend because it does not ask much from you. You do not need a ticket for the outdoor murals. You do not need a whole itinerary. You can park nearby, wander a little, look around, take photos, and then decide whether you’re in the mood for shopping, dinner, coffee, or ice cream.

That’s the Plaza District’s advantage. Plaza Walls is not sitting by itself in an empty lot somewhere. It is part of a walkable stretch of local businesses that gives you plenty of reasons to linger.

A few of my usual Plaza District stops are DNA Galleries, Dig It, and Roxy’s Ice Cream. DNA has long been one of those places where Oklahoma art, prints, gifts, and pop-culture weirdness all manage to live together without feeling forced. Dig It has its own colorful personality, and Roxy’s is dangerous if you were only planning to “look around for a minute.” That is how a simple mural stop turns into an afternoon.

Why Plaza Walls Feels Personal

One reason Plaza Walls has always meant a little more to me is because I know Carlos Barboza, one of Oklahoma City’s talented mural artists. I’ve known Carlos for years, and it has been fun watching his work and influence show up around the city.

That matters here because murals change how a city feels in real life, not just in marketing photos. A blank wall is a blank wall. A painted wall gives people a reason to slow down, take a picture, point something out to a kid, or cut through a neighborhood they might otherwise pass by.

Carlos is one of many artists who have helped make Oklahoma City more colorful. Plaza Walls gives that work a public stage, and it gives the rest of us a place to notice it without needing an art degree or a formal plan.

That is probably what I like most about it. The space is casual, but the work is not throwaway. Some pieces are playful. Some are bold. Some are strange in the best way. Some are the kind of thing you may only fully notice after you get home and look through your photos.

What To Do While You’re There

If you are visiting Plaza Walls for the first time, start on NW 16th Street in the Plaza District and look for the mural-covered alley areas behind the shops. Give yourself time to wander, because the best parts are not always the most obvious from the sidewalk.

Bring a camera or at least make sure your phone has storage. This is one of the better photo walks in Oklahoma City, especially if you like street art, color, and layered urban backdrops.

Then make a loop through the district. Stop into a shop. Get ice cream. Grab food. The Plaza District is one of those OKC neighborhoods that works best when you do not over-schedule it. Let the murals be the reason you show up, then let the street decide the rest.

For me, this visit was part assignment, part celebration, and part excuse to revisit a place I’ve been many times before. Hitting 10,000 followers was a milestone for Okie Almanac, but walking through Plaza Walls on the Fourth of July was a good reminder of why I started documenting Oklahoma places in the first place.

There is always another wall, another shop, another corner of the city worth paying attention to.
